Art is highly valued in the Roaring Fork Valley (Aspen to Glenwood Springs).  We have a far higher concentration of galleries to population than most large cities.  Add to that an expanding Aspen Art Museum, numerous art schools, art centers, dozens of cultural institutions, artists and collectors and you find a thriving art community.  Mrs. Korologos is well aware of the importance of art to the valley and to the many art students attending Anderson Ranch classes.  Her unique combination of board experience and her deep love and understanding of art will be an invaluable asset to the Ranch.  Congratulations to both.

Joel Ostlind - "You Can Get Hooked," hand colored etching. Sold for $5,000

Congratulations to all of our artists who are showing at the Coors Western Art Show this month, and a special congratulations to Joel Ostlind.  Joel’s hand colored etching, “You Can Get Hooked” sold for a record amount, more than 10 times its listed value.   “You Can Get Hooked” was a popular etching that sold out of edition quickly.  Joel decided to add watercolor to an artist’s proof and place it in the silent auction.  Apparently that was a clever thing to do.  The piece was listed with a value of $500.  A fierce bidding war ensued, and this special little etching ended up going to the high bidder for $5,000!  Congratulations Joel – you deserve all your success.  And for all of you who aren’t able to make it to the Coors show in Denver this month, join us March 8, for our group exhibition featuring Janet Nelson, Heather Foster, Dinah Worman, and Joel Ostlind.   Joel will be at the reception to demonstrate his printmaking technique live and in the gallery.  See you there.

It was a great evening at the Coors Western Art Show in Denver this evening. We were excited to see so many of our artists showing and selling at this prestigious event. Joel Ostlind was there with his beautiful etchings. Elizabeth Sandia had 3 wonderful pastels (see photo above with owner, Ann Korologos and Elizabeth). Next we met up with Dinah Worman who had several outstanding pastels and and a large painting I coveted for the gallery. Dan Young had several magnificent paintings. There was a large night scene that would take your breath away (sorry, it sold at the benefit). And finally we met with Jill Soukup who had several fabulous painting including a terrific large one of three bison.

Nov. 5, 2011 Hermitage Museum Foundation Dinner

The evening began with a cocktail reception on the 10th floor of Sotheby’s in the preview rooms of the Contemporary Evening Auction.  This important auction included masterpieces by Willem deKooning, Clyfford Still, Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, and more.  We moved down to the 7th floor for the main event and dinner.  Several important contemporary artists were honored for their impact on Russian art, and to the Hermitage Museum.  These included: Cy Twombly, Sergei Bugaev Afrika, and Ilya & Emilia Kabakov.

Of course, the height of the evening was when Ingrid’s piece “A Moment in Time” was auctioned off.  She created this unique piece as an homage to Catherine the Great, founder of the Hermitage Museum in 1764.  In the piece, Catherine, 16 looks to the future through a web of events connecting her to the past, and her impact on the future.  It is a beautiful work.  The auction was conducted by one of Sotheby’s auctioneers.  The bidding began at a modest $5,000, and quickly rose to $10,000.  There was a pause as several new bidders entered the auction bringing the piece up to $11,000, $12,000, $14,000.   Ingrid and I watched with excitement as the piece ultimately sold for $16,000.  What a thrill to have major collectors appreciate her work.  And most gratifying to know that the money will benefit one of the most important art institutions in the world.  Bravo and congratulations to Ingrid and the Hermitage Museum!
