Sometimes You Have to Say Thank you for a Thank you
The Ann Korologos Gallery loves to support our local community. And we do it gladly, just happy to help. Last November we sponsored “A Taste of Basalt,” the yearly benefit that the Basalt schools do each year. It is a great event that raises money for many things the school system doesn’t always cover, such as art supplies, specialized book, updated computer equipment and scholarships. This year was a great success, where the event raised over $60,000! Wow, we are proud to have been a part. Now here’s the fun part. Some of the students wrote thank you cards. Well, we couldn’t resist, and here they are. Thank you for the Thank yous:
Ann Korologs Elected Board President of Anderson Ranch
Congratulations Anderson Ranch Arts Center. On December 14, 2011, Ann Korologos was elected Board President. Mrs. Korologos brings a wealth of experience to this cherished art institution.
Art is highly valued in the Roaring Fork Valley (Aspen to Glenwood Springs). We have a far higher concentration of galleries to population than most large cities. Add to that an expanding Aspen Art Museum, numerous art schools, art centers, dozens of cultural institutions, artists and collectors and you find a thriving art community. Mrs. Korologos is well aware of the importance of art to the valley and to the many art students attending Anderson Ranch classes. Her unique combination of board experience and her deep love and understanding of art will be an invaluable asset to the Ranch. Congratulations to both.
Excerpt from Anderson Ranch Arts Center Press Release (January, 13, 2012)
Anderson Ranch Arts Center launched its 2012 workshop season at its Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 14, announcing over 150 workshops and field expeditions for the coming year, welcoming over 1,000 students and introducing a slate of events featuring renowned artists from around the world. Ann Korologos was named President of the Board, and two new members, Sam Harvey and Maureen Jerome, were added to the Board. Owner of Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt, Mrs. Korologos is currently on the board of directors of several non-profits and corporations including Harman International, Kellogg Company and Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. From 1987 – 1989, she served as the 19th U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Ronald Reagan, and from 1984 – 1987 as the Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Mrs. Korologos has been active as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Institute for 20 years, and as its chairman for four years. She also served as chairman of the RAND Corporation board of trustees. Mrs. Korologos is an 18-year resident of the Roaring Fork Valley. She and her husband Tom have taken classes at Anderson Ranch for the last 12 years, and she has been a member of its National Council since 2001.Coors Western Art Show part II
Congratulations to all of our artists who are showing at the Coors Western Art Show this month, and a special congratulations to Joel Ostlind. Joel’s hand colored etching, “You Can Get Hooked” sold for a record amount, more than 10 times its listed value. “You Can Get Hooked” was a popular etching that sold out of edition quickly. Joel decided to add watercolor to an artist’s proof and place it in the silent auction. Apparently that was a clever thing to do. The piece was listed with a value of $500. A fierce bidding war ensued, and this special little etching ended up going to the high bidder for $5,000! Congratulations Joel – you deserve all your success. And for all of you who aren’t able to make it to the Coors show in Denver this month, join us March 8, for our group exhibition featuring Janet Nelson, Heather Foster, Dinah Worman, and Joel Ostlind. Joel will be at the reception to demonstrate his printmaking technique live and in the gallery. See you there.
Coors western art show
It was a great evening at the Coors Western Art Show in Denver this evening. We were excited to see so many of our artists showing and selling at this prestigious event. Joel Ostlind was there with his beautiful etchings. Elizabeth Sandia had 3 wonderful pastels (see photo above with owner, Ann Korologos and Elizabeth). Next we met up with Dinah Worman who had several outstanding pastels and and a large painting I coveted for the gallery. Dan Young had several magnificent paintings. There was a large night scene that would take your breath away (sorry, it sold at the benefit). And finally we met with Jill Soukup who had several fabulous painting including a terrific large one of three bison.
It was a great evening. Congratulations
Joel, Elizabeth, Dinah, Dan, and Jill.
From Basalt to St Petersburg
Congratulations to our very own Ingrid Dee Magidson. On November 5th, Ingrid’s work was featured at the Hermitage Museum benefit at Sotheby’s in New York. The benefit was arranged by the Hermitage Museum Foundation to raise funds to expand the Hermitage Museum to include a contemporary wing that will house 20th and 21st Century art works. The prestigious $25,000 per table event included some of the biggest names in the art world. Ingrid’s artwork was the only piece for sale at the event.
The evening began with a cocktail reception on the 10th floor of Sotheby’s in the preview rooms of the Contemporary Evening Auction. This important auction included masterpieces by Willem deKooning, Clyfford Still, Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, and more. We moved down to the 7th floor for the main event and dinner. Several important contemporary artists were honored for their impact on Russian art, and to the Hermitage Museum. These included: Cy Twombly, Sergei Bugaev Afrika, and Ilya & Emilia Kabakov.

Bradley Place, Margarita Litvak, and a very proud Ingrid Dee Magidson with "A Moment in Time" at the Hermitage Museum Foundation Dinner and Auction, November 5, 2011
Of course, the height of the evening was when Ingrid’s piece “A Moment in Time” was auctioned off. She created this unique piece as an homage to Catherine the Great, founder of the Hermitage Museum in 1764. In the piece, Catherine, 16 looks to the future through a web of events connecting her to the past, and her impact on the future. It is a beautiful work. The auction was conducted by one of Sotheby’s auctioneers. The bidding began at a modest $5,000, and quickly rose to $10,000. There was a pause as several new bidders entered the auction bringing the piece up to $11,000, $12,000, $14,000. Ingrid and I watched with excitement as the piece ultimately sold for $16,000. What a thrill to have major collectors appreciate her work. And most gratifying to know that the money will benefit one of the most important art institutions in the world. Bravo and congratulations to Ingrid and the Hermitage Museum!

Cows love pumpkins, too!
The Harvest Fest is in full swing on Midland Ave here in Basalt, and we thought we’d share two of our favorite, appropriately themed paintings.
First is Northern California artist Ann White’s ‘The Central Coast.’ These cows are happily sharing the canvas and their field with a plethora of pumpkins.
Next is Utah artist Simon Wnegar’s ‘Season’s End.’
Now the question is, do you do you cherish art for the season, or would pumpkins be appreciated all year long?
